Warteg
The warung Tegal is where much of Indonesia eats lunch. Ours is served at lunch only: choose your proteins, a vegetable, rice and sambal, from rendang ayam to telur balado and orek tempe.
Noon to 10pm, one heritage townhouse in Ubud.
There are a great many restaurants in Ubud, and most visitors have only a few days to choose. Ours cooks Indonesia, one region at a time.
We are on Jalan Sri Wedari, in a heritage townhouse in central Ubud. The menu moves from Sumatra through Java and Bali to the Spice Islands, and every dish keeps the name of the place it comes from. This is modern Indonesian cooking by chef Will Meyrick, with Bali as one voice among many.
The kitchen runs from noon to 10pm without a break, so a day here has more than one shape. Here is how it goes.

The first tables sit down at noon, with the light coming through the tall windows and the morning’s walking still in everyone’s legs. Lunch can be a quick plate of Warteg or a long table of sate and curries. Nobody will hurry you either way.

The whole menu is on from noon. Order beef sate Padang and a salad, or stay for Javanese beef cheek and a plate of nasi kuning.

Fresh crushes, juices and smoothies join the drinks list at lunch only. Useful after a morning on the Ubud streets.

Every Tuesday and Friday, a live Indonesian orchestra plays Keroncong at dinner. It is Indonesia’s own string music, with roots that go back centuries, and the songs are the ones many Indonesians grew up with. It sits easily alongside a long meal.
What’s On

Batavia was always a crossroads, where European aperitivo craft met the aromatics of the Spice Islands. Every Wednesday and Saturday we bring that evening back: the bittersweet ritual of the Negroni, reimagined heritage bites and the warm soundtrack of 80s and 90s pop classics.
It is a trip down Indonesian memory lane. Take a seat, let the needle drop and settle in.
What’s OnNamed among the best restaurants in Indonesia in the Travel + Leisure Tastemakers 2025/2026, and on Urban List’s guide to the best Ubud restaurants for 2026.
My husband and I booked this restaurant on a whim and absolutely fell in love with our experience here. I’d say it was one of the highlights of our stay in Ubud.
September 2026
Exceptional food and service. We had the lobster dumplings, scallop ceviche and potato cubes to start, followed by beef rendang and garlicky greens for mains; everything was delicious.
October 2026
I was sceptical first… We ended up going both our last nights. Food is extremely flavourful and one can really see the quality of the product. We loved it.

Modern with a lot of class and heritage preserved… Well, we just have to come back again! Thank you to the amazing staff.

Restaurants in Ubud are spread between the rice fields and the centre of town, and the traffic has its own timetable. These are the things we tell friends to fit around a meal.
The ridge walk is best early, before the heat. Be back in town in time for lunch.
Go in the morning to see the spices, fruit and produce that end up on tables across the island.
In the centre of town. Cover shoulders and knees, and go late in the afternoon, before an early dinner.
